Class 153
The Class 153 DMU is a single car unit, although, it hasn't always been like this. They used to be Class 155 DMUs, but Regional Railways decided to turn thier 35 class 155s, into class 153s. An extensive rebuild of the the non cab end was carried out so the class 153 would have a second cab. (Cab No.2) The 57XXX cars recieved new toliets and luggage racks, while the 52XXX cars haid their toilets rebuilt to match the 57XXX cars. They were converted between 1991 and 1992 by Hunslet Barclay and Kilmanock, and was done so to assist trains by adding an extra car, or run on thier own on branchlines. There are a total of 70 class 153s which are owned by several companys. The class 156 was originally chosen for the converstion, but it was deemed inpracticle, if this happened, the unit would have been numbered Class 152, but the class 155 was deened more practicle. You can tell it has had a convertion because one end is smaller than the other. The small end is known as the 'Dog Box' end due to the size. These units have a maximum speed of 75 MPH like the class 155s. The numbering for the 52XXX cars was 153301/52301 to 153335/52335, while the 57XXX cars was 153351/57351 to 153385/57385.
